2. Hemalkasa Health Foundation, UK
(Web-site for HHF-UK is currently under construction)
Hemalkasa Health Foundation (formerly IWF - India Welfare Forum) is an organisation set up in UK by like-minded people who have taken upon themselves to support the Lok Biradari Prakalp (Hemalkasa project) in India. Mr. M. Shrotri is one of the core committee member of IWF. The aim of IWF is to generate as much funding in UK as possible to support the medical costs of running the tribal hospital at Hemalkasa.
Lok Biradari Prakalp was started in Hemalkasa village in 1973 by Baba Amte. Located in Bhamragad, in the Gadchiroli district in the state of Maharashtra, it is part of the Dandakarayna forest reserve. The area is inhabited by the Madia Gond tribals, who were among the most backward tribals, depending on forest produce and wild creatures for food. For treatment they often resorted to medicine men and witch doctors. The region has now become the focus of militancy by Naxalites. It is also physically separated from "civilization", and consequently has not been not of much focus of government spending as it is not an important "vote bank".
Baba Amte’s son, Dr. Prakash Amte along with Dr. Madakini Amte (Prakash’s wife), fresh from medical college went to Hemalkasa and have spent their subsequent life setting up a tribal hospital serving the Madia Gonds. This over the last 40 years has developed into a 50 bed hospital that caters to over 70,000 patients each year from more than 1,000 villages in a radius of 150 kilometers. There is a also residential school for tribal children. The project is now spread over 50 acres including the boarding schools for tribal boys and girls, and living accommodation for 119 workers, and 593 staff and students.
Please contact Mr. Milind Shrotri on milindshrotri@gmail.com for more information on how to contribute to this charity or for more information on HHF/IWF.
